Reform of Nigerian military, Defence Ministry begins

The Nigerian government has commenced the implementation of security reform recommendations.

Defence Minister, Bashir Magashi assured citizens of a rejuvenated and repositioned military.

The retired General spoke at the Ministry of Defence headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday.

Magashi inaugurated a 24-member committee to administer recommendations of the Reform Committee for the Ministry of Defence and the Armed Forces of Nigeria.

The report was submitted in April. Major General Alwali Jauji Kazir (rtd) chairs the committee to effect 7-point terms of reference.

Masashi noted that the onus is on the Implementation and Advisory Committee to institute necessary mechanisms.

The team will examine the recommendations and classify them into immediate, short, medium and long term as appropriate.

It will monitor progress in the implementation at Defence Ministry, Defence Headquarters and Services’ Headquarters; develop strategies to tackle any envisaged bottlenecks, and perform other functions as may be assigned.

Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Defence, Musa Istifanus charged members of the committee to see their assignment as a call to render selfless service to Nigeria.

Retired General, Kazir assured the government of his team’s total commitment to diligently carry out the assigned task.
