Meanwhile, in an effort to end Boko Haram insurgency, particularly in the North-East, the Nigeria police have deployed additional two thousand personnel from the Mobile Police squad and Counter Terrorism units, as well as sniffer dogs to the troubled region.

A statement on Sunday by Jimoh Moshood, Deputy Commissioner of Police and Force Public Relations Officer, Force Headquarters, Abuja, noted that Ibrahim Kpotun Idris, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), said the deployment was purely for military exercise and part of Operation Lafiya Dole in the fight against the insurgents in the North-East.

The deployment, Moshood noted, was consistent with section 4 of the Police Act and Regulations, which specified the general duties of the Nigeria police.

He said the general duties included that the police would be employed for the prevention and detection of crime, the apprehension of offenders, the preservation of law and order, the protection of lives and property, and the due enforcement of all laws and regulations with which they were directly charged, and would perform such military duties within or outside Nigeria as might be required of them by or under the authority of this or any other Act.

“Twenty-six units are on ground in Yobe State, in addition to the Police Mobile Force squadron in Yobe State.

Moshood revealed that the PMF, as well as the Counter Terrorism Unit and Anti Bomb Squad, among others, have been assisting the military in the fight against insurgency in the North East.

“It is of significance to note that the Police Mobile Force personnel, Counter Terrorism Units, Anti-Bomb Squad (EOD), Sniffer Dog Sections, the Federal Anti-Robbery Squad (FSARS) and conventional police personnel have been fighting along with the military in the front line against Boko Haram insurgency.

“They have also been providing security for restoration of law and order in the North-East, security for all the liberated towns and villages in the North-East, escort of foreign and local humanitarian workers and relief materials, protection of IDP camps and security of public and private infrastructures.

“The police air-wing surveillance helicopters and crews are also deployed to support most of the operations of Operation Lafiya Dole throughout the North-East in the fight against insurgency in the North-East.

“The Nigeria Police Force is fully committed to the fight against insurgency and will do all it takes in collaboration with the military to bring a quick end to Boko Haram insurgency and crisis in the North-East,” the statement concluded.
