Man in court for killing his grandmother over inheritance

A 26-year-old man, Solomon Bernard, was on Friday arraigned in a Benin, Edo State Magistrates’ Court for allegedly killing his grandmother over issues bothering on inheritance.
The prosecutor, Sunday Lucky, said the offence contravened Section 319 (a) of the Criminal Code, which provides that anyone found guilty shall be sentenced to death.
Lucky told the court that the accused committed the offence on November 20, at 13, Igunbo Street, Benin City.
He said the accused killed his maternal grandmother, Janet Ogbeifun, with a cutlass over storey building inheritance.
The plea of the accused person was however not taken.
The Magistrate, Taiye Omoruyi, said the court lacked jurisdiction to entertain the case and ordered that the accused be remand in prison custody.
Omoruyi also ordered that the case file should be duplicated and sent to the Department of Public Prosecution for legal advice.
She adjourned the case till February 8, 2016.
