Abducted Lagos pupils, others, regain freedom

The four persons who were abducted by gunmen from Lagos State Model College, Igbonla, Epe last Thursday have been released.

They were said to have been reunited with their families around 10.45pm yesterday.

Though, both the Police and the Lagos State Government denied paying any ransom to secure their release, but a source close to the family of one of the students alleged that about N1 million was paid as ransom for the release of one of the students who became sick after last Saturday’s heavy down pour.

Following the worsening health situation of one of the students, the kidnappers had allegedly demanded N1 million from his parents as ransom for his release.

The family was said to have raised  N750,000 which they offered to the kidnappers, who in turn rejected it and asked for N1 million.

The new offer was a far cry from the initial N100million they had demanded for after they had stormed the college last Thursday  and abducted the vice principal, a teacher, and two students of the school.

By Saturday evening, the kidnappers had reduced the ransom to N5 million each totalling N30 million, before yesterday’s further reduction to N1million.

Gunmen had stormed the Model College, Igbonla, Epe and abducted the Vice Principal, a teacher and four students.

Two of the students were said to have escaped from the grip of the kidnappers with varying degrees of injuries.
