#June12thProtest: Stop attacks on peaceful protesters – Amnesty Urges FG

Amnesty International has urged the Federal Government of Nigeria to end attacks on peaceful protesters in Nigeria.

The Civil society organisation stated this in a statement on Saturday.

The group stressed that it received reports of attacks on protesters on June 12 Democracy Day on Saturday.

The statement read in part, “Amnesty International has been receiving disturbing reports of attacks on peaceful protesters in Abuja, Lagos and Ibadan.

“Some protesters have also been arrested while others were injured.

“We again call on the Nigerian authorities to respect human rights and end attacks on peaceful protesters.”

Meanwhile, The FCT Police Command said it successfully dispersed members of the proscribed Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN)-Shiites and other groups from taking advantage of the June 12 Democracy Day to embark on protest in the nation’s capital.

FCT command Police Public Relations Officer, Yusuf Mariam, disclosed this on Saturday.
