5 dead, several injured in shooting at Florida airport

At least five people are dead and eight others are injured following an alleged shooting at Fort Lauderdale Airport in Florida, USA.

The gunman is already in custody but motive for the attack is still unknown.

The incident is said to have taken place in Terminal 2, baggage claim, at around 12.55pm local time.

Unconfirmed reports stated that police were looking for a second shooter, however the Broward County Sheriffs Office have since confirmed that the gunman was alone.

Sheriff Scott Israel said: ‘There has been no confirmation of a second shooting, it seemed someone got injured evacuating.

‘We’ve had no confirmation that there have been any gunshots fired other than the incident at Terminal 2.

‘There is one suspect only. It’s too early to say whether it’s terrorism.’

According to local press, the shooter appeared to be a man in his 20s wearing a Star Wars T-shirt who was shot by police as he attempted to reload.

Law enforcement sources identified the shooter as Esteban Santiago, a 26-year-old man born in New Jersey.

The Sheriffs office stated that officers are currently going step-by-step through the airport before reopening.
