Rotary District 9111 plans to build and equip a N723 million wellness centre in the 2026/27 year.
Governor-Elect, Mrs Bukola Bakare, said this at the District Team Learning Seminar for incoming leaders of the body i in Amuwo Odofin, Lagos.
She also planned to embark on a medical intervention of over N100 million, to involve 100 cataract surgeries and donation of 5,000 eye glasses.
In education, she planned to train teachers and headteachers; execute a N50 million empowerment for women and youths; N50 million Peace project to empower non-Rotarians; N30 million grant for public image and N50 million for scholarships under District Educational and Welfare Endowment Fund programme.
To get cash for the programmes, Bakare said she would embark on a fund raiser as well as attract funds from their global body.
She sought members’ cooperation to achieve her plans as well as execute impact-driven ideas, reminding them of their motto: ‘’Create lasting impact’’ as she unveiled the ‘’Value, impact and legacy’’ vision. She stressed accelerated growth and visibility as well as making the district a leading one in Rotary during her tenure.
Beyond these, Bakare said, she pledged to boost membership of the 81-club district by 25 per cent, and that this is achievable if members, and their leaders were committed to the cause.
The District Governor, Prince Henry Akinyele, said leadership in Rotary is akin to a relay where the baton is handed to the next participant; and not a competition. He reminded the trainees that in July they would take over and thus be ready to assume duties. ‘’You were not chosen by chance but by your character. The success of the 2026/27 Rotary year depends on your collaboration. Be proactive and supportive,’’ he added.
He noted that leadership is not accidental. It is prepared for the reason Rotary embarked on the training, noting that teamwork is the key to success.
In a message via Zoom, the Rotary International President-Elect, Yinka Babalola, while congratulating the trainees, charged them on transformational leadership. He said Rotary emphasises people-focused leadership, away from the focus on members. He urged them to embark on projects and programmes that would create impacts on the people.
Babalola said: “Another quality we share is that Rotary has shaped who we are and made us better. That is where change truly begins. Not only for the people we serve, but also for ourselves. Think about our vision statement. Together, we see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change across the globe, in our communities and in ourselves. When we talk about lasting change across the globe, we not only talk about ending bullying, we talk about building peace. When we talk about changing our communities, there are plenty of incredible examples. But then I ask, how do we make lasting change in ourselves and with lasting solutions?’’
A facilitator, Dr Wuroala Adekunbi, also emphasised teamwork, constant training and application of what they would be taught or learn.
At the event were leaders of the district, including the District Governor-Nominee Samuel Ayetutu; Chairman of the seminar planning committee, Past Assistant Governor (PAG) Samson Okenyi; and Past District Governor (PDG) Bola Oyebade, who anchored the training.
