Lagos shuts popular VI restaurant over illegal wastewater discharge

The Lagos State Wastewater Management Office has ordered the closure of Yakoyo Abula Joint, a popular eatery in Victoria Island, after investigators discovered that the facility was discharging untreated wastewater, fats, and oil directly into public drains.

The enforcement team sealed the restaurant on Tuesday morning following an inspection that uncovered deliberate release of effluents into drainage channels, causing blockages and creating conditions that could expose residents to waterborne diseases.

Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, announced the enforcement action via a statement on his X handle.

He noted that the outlet, located at 134 Sinari Daranijo Street, had been polluting the environment and endangering public health through its waste disposal practices.

Wahab added that the shutdown is part of the ongoing #ZeroToleranceLagos campaign, a statewide initiative targeting food establishments and commercial facilities found violating environmental and wastewater management laws.
