Troops of the Nigerian Army, in collaboration with a joint security patrol team, engaged suspected armed herders along the Naka–Adoka road in Benue State in a gunfire during a routine operation.
According to sources who spoke with Zagazola Makama, the incident occurred when the patrol team encountered herders obstructing the road with their cattle. Upon sighting the security personnel, the herders fled into the nearby bushes.
Two of the fleeing herders were reportedly seen carrying AK-47 rifles. When challenged, the armed suspects opened fire on the troops while retreating deeper into the bush.
The patrol team responded with return fire and carried out an extensive search of the area. While the gunmen managed to escape, a large number of cattle were seized during the operation and taken to the nearest station.
Security officials have intensified surveillance in the area to prevent further attacks and apprehend the fleeing suspects.
