How Peter Obi, South East Gave PDP More Votes Than Atiku’s North-East In 2019

In the South-East region of the vice-presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the 2019 elections, Peter Obi contributed greatly to the votes of the party in the last presidential election.

The main opposition party gained more votes in the South-East than the All Progressives Congress which eventually emerged as the winner of the electoral process.

PDP had lesser votes in the North-East where its 2019 presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar came from compared to the level of votes in the South-East.

There are signs that the main opposition party might find it difficult to gain those votes in the 2023 presidential election following the resignation of Obi from the party.

Recall that Obi stated that he was dumping the PDP because the party had made it impossible for him to continue to contribute to nation-building on its platform.

The PDP in 2019, with Obi as its Vice Presidential Candidate, garnered 1,693,485 votes (75 per cent) from the five states of the South-East; and 1,255,357 votes (27.5 per cent) from the North-East.

On the other hand, the APC polled 403,968 votes (19 per cent) in the South-East and 3,238,783 votes (67.5 per cent) in the North-East.

PDP in 2023 would be hoping to capture the support of the South-East to emerge victorious in the forthcoming election.
