Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani has tackled Senate President Ahmad Lawan for speaking on behalf of the President about fuel subsidy removal.
The former lawmaker on Wednesday argued that such matters would have been better heard by Nigerians directly from the mouth of President Muhammadu Buhari or his representatives.
It will be recalled that Lawan on Tuesday after a meeting with the President at the Aso Rock Villa in Abuja, told Nigerians while speaking to State House correspondents that Buhari has not given any order for the removal of subsidy on petrol.
He said this was done to allay the fears, concerns, and agitations about the plans by the government to implement total fuel subsidy removal this year.
“Well, it will be of interest to Nigerians to hear what I’ve come to discuss with Mr President among several other things.
Many of us are very concerned with the recent agitations, protests, and many citizens were so concerned, our constituents across the country are very concerned that the federal government will remove the petroleum subsidy. And for us, as parliamentarians, as legislators representing the people of Nigeria, this must be of interest to us.
And we’ve just finished our recess, we had gone home to our constituencies and senatorial districts. And will feel the pulse of our people. And I found it necessary to visit Mr President, as the leader of our government and our leader in the country, to discuss this particular issue of concern to Nigerians, and I’m happy to inform Nigerians that Mr President never told anyone that the petroleum subsidy should be removed,” Lawan had declared.
But taking to his Twitter account, Sani on Wednesday said the position of President Buhari on fuel subsidy removal should be heard by Nigerians directly from him or through his spokespersons or Ministers and not the Senate President.
Sani wrote: “The position of the President on Petroleum subsidy should be heard directly from the President or the spokesperson of the President or the Minister of state for Petroleum or the Minister of Finance and not from the Senate President.”
