Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has begged the World Bank not to withdraw its support for flood control in Ibadan.
Makinde made the appeal on Wednesday.
Recalled that Ibadan Urban Flood Management Project (IUFMP), a world bank funded initiative, started during the administration of the immediate past Governor, late Abiola Ajimobi.
It was, however, gathered that the project has been having some issues since the inception of Makinde.
Our correspondent gathered that the World Bank had earlier vowed to withdraw its support for the flood control project in some parts of Ibadan.
The world bank according to reports had concluded plans to withdraw its support for the project due to lack of commitment from the state government.
The World Bank in a statement signed by Mr. Shubham Chaudhuri, Country Director, Nigeria, Western and Central Africa Region, vowed to withdraw its support.
Makinde has however appealed to the World Bank not to withdraw its support.
Makinde in a statement made available through his Chief Press Secretary, Taiwo Adisa, said his government remained committed to the project.
He insisted that his government will continue to fund the project.
Makinde while speaking further, noted that work is ongoing in some of the projects.
He said the project would help to provide instant relief to residents of flood-prone areas.
“The governor has also appealed to the World Bank not to withdraw its conditional no objection for the Second Pool of Long Term Investments (PLTI2) BERs, and make available funding for the contracts.
The dredging exercise is ongoing, helping to provide instant relief to residents of flood-prone areas where structural interventions are yet to take place.
Work on the long-term investments is ongoing on the channels of Agodi, Kudeti, Ogbere, Orogun, etc. as earlier launched, barring the occasional drawbacks by the inclement weather.”
