FG, Kano agreed to send Sanusi to Awe – Source

A fresh insight as to how the dethroned Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II was sent first to Loko and later to Awe, both in Nasarawa State, has emerged.

Sources close to the Kano Government House confided in one of our correspondents that the officials from the Department of State Services (DSS), the Federal Government and the Kano State Government all met and took the decision to banish the former Emir 545.9 kilometres away from the ancient city to Nasarawa State.

The source, who spoke with Sunday Telegraph on condition of anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the issue, said: “The decision to send Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II to Nasarawa State was not Ganduje’s alone. It was taken in consultation with security officials and had the backing of the Federal Government.  We would not have unilaterally taken such sensitive decision without a clearance from and inputs from the DSS and of course the Federal Government.”

Until the Federal High Court in Abuja set him free on Friday afternoon, Sunday Telegraph learnt in Nasarawa that the state government had initially turned down Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai’s request to visit the deposed Emir.

Mallam el-Rufai was in the state to visit the Emir but was prevented from doing so by his Nasarawa State counterpart, Abdullahi Sule, who insisted that he must get a clearance before he would be allowed to see the one time Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

“However, shortly after the Federal High Court ruled that his incarceration in Awe was illegal and should be set free, el-Rufai was allowed access to the Emir and he accompanied him to Lagos,” explained our source.

The man in the eye of the storm, Sanusi himself, insisted that the action taken against him was masterminded from Abuja.

He claimed the Attorney General of Kano State, Ibrahim Muktar, and the Attorney General of the Federation, Mr Abubakar Malami (SAN), instructed the Department of State Services (DSS) and police to detain him.

Sanusi, who is currently in Lagos, after arriving in a private jet from Abuja late on Friday, said he was harassed and rushed out of the palace without being allowed to pick up his personal belongings.
