CAN Rejoices With Obasanjo Over Escape From Death

..Asks FG to listen to his advice on Islamisation and Fulanisation agenda.

The President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), His Eminence, Rev. Dr. Samson ‘Supo Ayokunle, has expressed profound appreciation to God Almighty and rejoices with former President Olusegun Obasanjo for escaping from the hand of death when the Ethiopian Airline flight nearly crashed on Wednesday, May 29, 2019, at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.

In a press statement signed by his Special Assistant (Media & Communications), Pastor Adebayo Oladeji, Ayokunle also calls on the Federal Government to pay keen attention to Obasanjo’s recent thought-provoking position when he warned the Federal Government and the nation about West African Fulanisation and African Islamisation agenda.
We give God thanks, praise, glory, honour and adoration for sparing the life of President Olusegun Obasanjo and others who escaped untimely death while on board of that Boeing 777-300 belonging to the Ethiopian Airline flight on Wednesday. He who keeps watching over us neither sleeps nor slumbers. It is our prayer that as Obasanjo goes round the globe searching for panacea to the problems facing humanity, God will continue to watch over him. He will not suffer untimely death in Jesus’ Name.

We appeal to the Federal Government to listen to Obasanjo on his counsel over the alleged West African Fulanisation and African Islamisation agenda instead of resorting to disrespecting him and misinterpreting his noble warnings to the nation. The likes of Obasanjo are treated as honourable statesmen and institutions in developed nations like the United States the United Kingdom, but here, we abuse our former leaders and pour venoms on them whenever their thoughts are critical to the government’s action or policies. This is not only unfortunate but exposes us as a people that have lost their moral values. Obasanjo sacrifices a lot for this nation in order to make it one and great! He deserves respect and his pronouncements should be treated with caution. The truth is evident for those who care to see the danger of Obasanjo’s warning except those who are either part of the agenda or are just being mischievous.
When the perceived genocide started in Southern Kaduna, how many of the suspected herdsmen involved in the barbaric attacks were arrested by the security men? How many of them have been detained and are being prosecuted? We don’t know of any as far as CAN is concerned. How many guns have been recovered from them? Instead in Adamawa State, five Christian young men were arrested, tried and sentenced to death for allegedly killing a herd boy. Why we are totally against the killing of any human being, we question the promptness with which the suspects were arrested by the police. Why can’t they use the same expertise to arrest the rampaging herdsmen? While guns owned illegally by herdsmen were not recovered from them, the government instead directed that those who are licensed to hold guns should submit them.

Another example of justice denied was that of Kaduna State. Kaduna State Government once claimed that they had some 17 suspects responsible for the killings in Southern Kaduna. Almost three years ago, we never heard anything about the case again. So, if the government is not aware or is not interested in the Fulanisation agenda, the way and manner it has been handling the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association advocating for them in various ways in order for the criminal members of the Association to be excused from blame puts a question mark on government’s sincerity in bringing criminals to book. You can’t be treating criminals with kids’ gloves and expect them to change. That is why when these killers realised that nothing would happen to them, they now increased the tempo and started attacking with impunity. They have now graduated to an unprecedented level of kidnapping for ransom.

In a similar vein and with all the cries we have made about the unconstitutionality of Nigeria’s membership of Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) after being sworn in, going for such a conference was still the first assignment of President Muhammadu Buhari. This is an organisation which states it is “the collective voice of the Muslim world” and works to “safeguard and protect the interests of the Muslim world in the spirit of promoting international peace and harmony”. Are the government officials listening to those who voted them into power at all? Is the government not heating up the polity? We all remember how Nigeria was smuggled into OIC during the military. We wonder if the President is ready to attend the meeting of the World Council of Churches or be asking the Vice President to represent him whenever the members meet.
As President Buhari begins another term, we appeal to him to have a blueprint for the security challenges facing the country. He should see the whole country as his and avoid lopsided appointments in every facet of the government, especially, the appointment chief security officers. The security councils and other agencies of the government must not be dominated by people who share same faith and ethnicity with him. This is unprecedented in the history of Nigeria. The preponderance of the Fulani people at the corridors of power is what Chief Obasanjo refers to as fulanisation agenda.

We have many states in the North where churches are being denied of certificate of occupancy. This is a ploy to allow excuses to be given later for these churches to be pulled down whenever religious fanatics are in government in those states. As we rejoice with all the Northern State governors as they assume office, let them revisit this ungodly policy of discrimination against fellow Nigerians. When CAN speaks, we know what we are saying and we want peace, progress and development in Nigeria. Our admonition is simple: let us have a religious balance in our system. The government’s defence of ‘all our appointments are based on merit’ is escapist, too illogical and pedestrian. Does that mean that the only persons that merit sensitive appointments in this country are from one religion? Is there any wisdom in such a statement?

There are people who prefer to call CAN names, and they say the way we talk about Islamisation is like we are looking for demons to cast out. If Obasanjo talks and the government is not ready to listen, then, who can tell them the truth? This position of Obasanjo was equally supported by Professor Wole Soyinka, Pastor Tunde Bakare and Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, former Chairman of the ruling party among others. This shows that this is a serious matter that should not be waved aside but treated as a matter of national urgency. If the Fulanis love our President who is their blood brother, they should not be causing problems in the society for him. They are supposed to be the most well behaved. We plead earnestly with all armed groups to embrace peace and allow Nigeria to witness progress.
