APC wins Edo LG polls

Drums of celebration were yesterday rolled out in parts of Edo State following announcement by the Edo State Independent Electoral Commission (EDSIEC) that the All Progressives Congress (APC) was the winner of the local council election conducted on Saturday.

This was as Governor Godwin Obaseki called on the newly elected chairmen to help deepen his brand of strategic leadership in the 18 local council areas of the state to ensure that those at the grassroots enjoy resultoriented governance. The governor, who spoke during a thanksgiving service at the St. Paul’s Catholic Church, Airport Road, Benin, stressed that the ‘wake and see’ phenomenon of leadership will now be felt by those at the grassroots across the state.” Also, chieftains of the APC had reacted on the outcome of the polls.

The results declared by EDSIEC showed that the APC defeated its opponents with a wide margin. It will be recalled that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) boycotted the election and instituted legal action against the state government, the House of Assembly and EDSIEC, challenging the amendment of the local government law and other processes leading to the conduct of the election. EDSIEC Chairman, Prof. Stanley Orobator, who announced the results, said the certificates of return would be presented to the winners on today.

Orobator was however silent on how much was spent to conduct the polls. He directed journalists to check the state annual budget to determine the total cost of the exercise, expressing satisfaction at the conduct of the elections. The election monitored in parts of the three senatorial districts was generally peaceful and witnessed large turnout of voters.
