Painter jumps into canal in Lagos, drowns

A middle-aged man, identified simply as Ganiyu has jumped into the Kirikiri canal in Apapa, Lagos.

It was gathered that Ganiyu, a car painter, resumed at work on Saturday in high spirit, drinking and acting funny before he jumped into the canal and eventually drowned.

The remains of Ganiyu which were recovered at the Mile 2 side of the canal on Sunday, had been buried.

It was learned that Ganiyu, a father of one, had made a similar attempt to jump into the canal a few years ago.

Mr. Ibrahim, Chairman of the artisans operating at the waterfront, who spoke to on the phone, said: “When I came to work that morning, I asked Ganiyu to help paint a vehicle.

“While I was talking with him, I noticed that he was already drunk. So I collected the money I gave him and went back to continue working on the vehicle I was fixing.

“About 30 minutes later, one of my apprentices called me, saying Ganiyu was acting funny. Immediately, I rushed to towards where he was standing, but before I got there, he had jumped into the canal.”

The deceased kept the bottle of beer he was drinking and his phone at the bank of the canal, before taking the jump.

One of his co-workers (names withheld) added that “immediately the incident happened, we called local divers to help us search the canal. Unfortunately, we could not rescue him as the water had carried him away.

“It was on Sunday morning that his corpse was found at the bank of Mile 2 waterside by one of the local divers, who notified us that a corpse was lying at the bank.”

He added that they reported the incident to the Police and his family member immediately, before he was buried by the waterside.
