FLASH BACK: No military coup can remove me, Mugabe boasts in first BBC interview in 1980

Watch detained President of Zimbabwe saying no military coup can remove him.  Mugabe stated this in a BBC interview in 1980, shortly after taking over power in the troubled country.

Recall that Zimbabwe’s military had seized state TV, saying it is targeting people close to President Robert Mugabe for causing “social and economic suffering”.

Heavy gun and artillery fire could be heard in northern parts of the capital Harare early on Wednesday.

The army action comes after Mr Mugabe sacked Vice-President Emmerson Mnangagwa, amid a row over succession.

A government source told Reuters news agency that Finance Minister Ignatius Chombo had been detained.
