A machete and hammer wielding moped gang have raided a luxury jewellery store in London’s Regent Street making off with a high value of goods worth millions of pounds.
The gang-of-six threw in gas canisters, smashed their way into Mappin and Web and broke open cabinets thus robbing the store before all fleeing on just one moped.
Pictures from the scene show the shop’s large doors flung open with smoke filling the store.
One of the three bikes the gang arrived on was abandoned at the scene with a second involved in a collision on Oxford Street during the escape.
Witnesses reported that all six robbers eventually crammed on to one bike to flee, shortly after 7pm this evening. No one was hurt.
A Met Police spokesperson said: “At this early stage we believe this has been committed by six suspects who were riding three mopeds. Some of them were armed with a machete and a hammer.
“They entered the premises and smashed cabinets, stealing a high value of goods before escaping.”
No arrests have been made with police hunting down the suspects.
Witnesses saw security devices set off at the store.
Steve Ralfe tweeted: “Smash and grab at Regent Street jewellers. All three emergency services on scene, smoke deployed in the store.”
Siobhain Butterworth said: “Seems to have been an attempted robbery at Mappin & Web on Regent Street. Getaway vehicle appears to have been scooter.”
