UNIMAID lecturers: ASUU threatens strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has vowed to embark on indefinite strike if the Federal Government failed to strengthen security in the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) and ensure the release of the abducted lecturers.

Recall that the sect members attacked lecturers of the institution few days ago, killing no fewer than five persons and kidnapping several others.

Speaking on the development, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, ASUU president said the government should do all within its power to free their members held by the insurgents.

He said, “Our union is no doubt saddened by the UNIMAID incident. It is a concrete manifestation of our fears all along. As far back as June 9, we expressed our fears about the alarming security situation in the Maiduguri metropolis and particularly in UNIMAID. Those fears we expressed are beginning to manifest concretely.

“The situation could have been better handled. Our members, who were carrying out their legitimate duties were made vulnerable to this experience.

‘‘We have told the government to take the necessary steps and get our members in captivity released or else, we may be forced to call out our members. But we are getting assurances now that the government is going to do the needful.”

Meanwhile, the UNIMAID staff abducted by Boko Haram had recently appealed to the Federal Government to meet the demands of Boko Haram so they can regain their freedom.

A video obtained by Channels Television, showed two lecturers in the Geology Department of the University, Yusuf Ibrahim and Dr Solomon N. Yusuf, and the third man, Haruna, a driver.

The men said that they were part of oil workers and academics ambushed and abducted by the Abu Musab al-Barnawi faction of Boko Haram on Tuesday.
