The Acting Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Kpotum Idris, has been confirmed as the IGP of the Nigeria Police Force by the Council of State meeting, presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari, at the presidential villa, Abuja, on Wednesday.
Idris has held the office in an interim capacity since his appointment in June succeeding Solomon Arase who proceeded on retirement after attaining the retirement age of 60 years.
Idris, who hails from Kutigi, Lavun in Niger State, was born on January 15 1959, and was enlisted into the Nigerian Police Force in 1984, after graduating from the Ahmadu Bello University Zaria with a Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture.
He also holds a degree in Law from the University of Maiduguri.
The Council also approved the appointment of six Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and five commissioners for the National Population Commission.
The Council, which is chaired by the sitting President, comprises the sitting vice president as the deputy chairman, all former Presidents and Heads of State, all former Chief Justices of Nigeria, Senate President, Speaker of the House of Representatives, state Governors and the Attorney-General of the Federation.
In attendance were former Head of Interim National Government, Chief Ernerst Shionekan; former Head of State, Gen Abdulsalami Abubarkar; former President Goodluck Jonathan; former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Lawal Uwais; former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Alpha Belgore and former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Idris Kutigi among others.
