Abducted Sierra Leone Diplomat Regains Freedom

Major General Nelson Williams, the Sierra Leone’s Deputy High Commissioner to Nigeria, who was kidnapped last week, has been released.

The former head of Sierra Leone’s army is said to be in Abuja at the moment and he is reportedly in sound health.

“The diplomat has been reunited with the Sierra Leonean High Commissioner (ambassador) and his family,” said Force Public Relations Officer, Don Awunah.

Last Friday, Williams was abducted by some gunmen on his way to Kaduna for a military ceremony.

According to multiple reports, the diplomat was released on Tuesday, but it is not certain if any ransom was paid for his freedom.

The abduction of the Sierra Leonean was hugely embarrassing for the Nigerian government, which did everything possible to ensure his release.

It is believed that Gen Williams is the first Sierra Leone diplomat to be abducted anywhere in the world since the country became independent in 1961, a year after Nigeria gained her independence.
