Hilarious Cartoon Sums Up Osun State’s Current Hijab Palaver

The religion-centred brouhaha concerning the dressing of school pupils in Osun State took a dramatic turn this week as students turned up to school garbed in various religious dresses.

Recall that the Muslim community in the state had in 2013 instituted a case against the state government on the right of female Muslim students in public schools to use hijab on their school uniforms.

A high court in its judgement on the case on June 3, 2016, granted female Muslim students the right to be wearing hijabs.

But the state Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) faulted the judgement and vowed to appeal it. CAN further said that it would direct Christian students in public schools to be wearing church garments to schools to propagate their faith if the state government implemented the judgement. A threat that the Christian body carried out.

This week, Christian students rocked choir robes to school thereby attracting the wrath of the governor who yesterday threatened to expel them.

Today’s edition of The Leadership newspaper has now introduced a new dimension to the story with an ‘African traditional religion’ practising student dressing according to his faith.
