Hillary Clinton makes history as first US female presidential nominee

Hillary Clinton has become the first woman to ever become the presidential nominee of a major political party in the United States’ 240-year history.

Hillary Clinton took the stage on Tuesday night, having secured the delegates needed to win the nomination and locking down a popular vote victory after the final state primaries of the election.

That was enough for her to take a victory lap before the Golden State’s polls even closed, and offer an
olive branch to stubborn liberal stalwart Bernie Sanders and his backers.

She made a point to pat Sanders on the back for a hard-fought race, praise with a hint of “it’s time” as she looked past his gripes about super-delegates and a “rigged” system and moved to unify the party against Donald Trump.

“I want to congratulate Sen. Sanders for the extraordinary campaign,” she said. “He has spent his long career in public service fighting for progressive causes and principles and has excited millions of voters, especially young people.”

And Clinton made a push to unite not just progressives but all anti-Trump Americans.

“Whether you supported me or Sen. Sanders or one of the Republicans we all need to keep working toward a better, fairer, stronger America,” she said, calling Trump “temperamentally unfit” to be president.

“Donald Trump is temperamentally unfit to be president and commander-in-chief,” Clinton said, while pointing to Trump’s controversial rhetoric against immigrants, Muslims, women and, most recently, a judge of Hispanic ethnicity.

“He wants to win by stoking fear and rubbing salt in wounds and reminding us daily just how great he is.”
