A Capitol Police officer was shot on Monday at the U.S. Capitol Visitors Center in Washington, D.C., prompting lockdowns at the White House and Congress.
The shooter was quickly taken into custody after the Monday afternoon shooting, the Associated Press reports. The police officer’s injuries were not believed to be serious, according to initial reports.
The D.C. Police Department said the shooter no longer represented a threat to the public:
An email sent to Capitol workers called for people to shelter in place after the shots were reported. The Senate alert email said to “close, lock and stay away from external doors and windows” and that no one would be permitted to enter or exit Capitol buildings until further notice.
The White House was also locked down amid the annual Easter Egg Roll festivities. About 35,000 people were invited to the White House today for the event.
