Soccer match ends in tragedy after player shoots, kills referee following red card

  • Tragic: The attacker also shot another player in the incident

An amateur footballer player in Argentina is currently being hunted by the police after he shot a referee dead for sending him off during a game.

The unfortunate incident occurred in the Cordoba district of the football-loving South American nation.

Although details of what transpired on the pitch were still sketchy, it was believed that the referee sent the player off for flooring an opponent.

Not satisfied with the referee’s decision, the attacker was said to have run out of the pitch to get a gun which he kept in his backpack.

While the game was continuing, he ran back on the pitch with the gun and shot the referee thrice: in the head, chest and neck.

Another footballer was also shot on the chest but survived and is still recuperating in hospital.

It could not be established if the player shot was the one that caused the attacker being sent off.

While the deceased referee was identified as Cesar Flores, 48, the hospitalised footballer was identified as Walter Zarate, 25.

According to a police officer, “We don’t know what happened with the referee but the player was angry and went to get his gun and killed him.”

The attacker has not been identified.
