Oil workers meet Kachikwu, vow to oppose planned sack

Oil workers have vowed to resist attempts by multinational companies and management of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) to retrench workers under any guise.

Their position was made known after a meeting with the minister of State for Petroleum Resources and Group Managing Director of the NNPC Dr. Ibe Kachikwu late Wednesday.

The meeting, it was learned, was held to avert the imminent job crisis in the NNPC  and multinational oil companies operating in Nigeria.

Oil giants, Chevron and Shell are among companies reportedly said to be extending the planned sack of thousands of workers globally to Nigeria.

But speaking after the meeting, the National President of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), Igwe Achese, said the union will definitely react by resisting any attempt to cause job losses in the oil and gas sector especially at the NNPC.

Achese, who is also the Deputy President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) said, “Vehemently, we are going to resist any attempt. We have advised service companies, multinational companies  that are in the act of outsourcing and contracting that will portend loss of jobs to Nigerians. We will say no to them because that is not what this government is all about. The government today talks about job creation and not job losses. With the current economic challenges we are having in our country, we need not to lose jobs that are already created,”

Asked what concrete assurance the minister gave them concerning the security of jobs of union members,  Achese said “One of the concrete assurance he has given is that there will be no job losses, he has said there will be job security and that he is thinking of expanding the business of the NNPC to be a profit organization and a world class oil and gas company like Petrobras and Petronas and that is what we are thinking.”

“If you ask me, what is the staff strength of NNPC and where is the NNPC today, what is the staff strength of Petrobras, Petronas and the rest of them? We are just an inch of the staff strength of these organisation. Most of them have a staff strength of 34,000 personnel. The entire staff strength of NNPC today is not up to 5000 as the case maybe and you are talking about these organizations that came after you or almost the same time?”
