FG targets 250,000 jobs from new rail lines

The federal government is targeting the creation of 250,000 direct jobs and more indirect jobs from the construction of new rail lines.

Minister of Transportation, Chibuike Amaechi, said this during a tour of agencies and parastatals under his ministry yesterday. He said the contribution of the transportation sector to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) was unacceptably low, saying the federal government would, from next year, open up the sector for job creation and revenue generation.

He said Nigerians had suffered due to inadequate transportation, assuring that the year 2016 would witness a revolution in all facets of the transportation sector.

He said the transportation sub sector including the aviation, maritime and railway would be repositioned for efficiency and more revenue generation.

He said government would pursue legislations that would open up the sector.

“With the resuscitation of commercial traffic from Port Harcourt to Aba amongst others, we have begun the revitalization of this key sub-sector of the Nigerian economy,” he said.
