NCC to fine network providers for poor service during Yuletide

The Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, Prof. Umar Danbatta, on Friday warned that any network provider that failed to give quality service during the Yuletide would be fined.

Danbatta, who was represented by the NCC Head of Public Affairs Department, Reuben Mouka, gave the warning during the Commission’s Day at the ongoing International Trade Fair in Port Harcourt, Cross River State.

He stated that the trade fair would provide an opportunity to meet and interact with telecom consumers to resolve issues of quality service delivery.

Danbatta noted that NCC has a very active consumer affairs bureau which is saddled with the responsibility of catering for the affairs of the consumer at all times.

He said events like the trade fair create a platform for the commission to know the quality of service consumers are getting from network providers.

“It is usually more prevalent during the festive period when people move from one location to another.

“The commission is working very assiduously on all issues concerning quality of service in the industry to ensure that consumers are getting a fair deal in the use of their services”, he said.

The Executive Vice Chairman also stated that the commission would monitor the level of network compliance against the Key Performance Indicators set out for quality of services rendered.

Danbatta said, “Poor performance against quality of service indicators within this period will attract commensurate penalties.

“We are not relenting in the provision of choices and alternatives to consumers where they can move away from current network and use same number.”

Danbatta further called on members of the public to protect telecom installations from vandalism as such act would affect the quality of service.

He also observed that the concerns in certain quarters that telecom facilities could cause health hazards had been dismissed by the World Health Organization,WHO.

Danbatta said, “WHO has said no known health hazards have been discovered or traced to telephone equipment or infrastructure.”

He urged telecom users to call toll free lines of their service providers to resolve their challenges. He further urged customers to also call NCC’s toll free line.
