Insecurity heightens as fleeing armed robbers kill Police DPO in Port Harcourt

The Rivers State Police Command has confirmed the death of Chief Superintendent of Police, CSP Cliff Igwegbe, who was the DPO of Rumuokoro Police division.

Police Public Relations Officer, Ahmad Muhammad said CSP Igwebe made a supreme sacrifice by putting his life on the line for others.

The command spokesman said the late DPO and other officers responded to a distress call but were ambushed by the hoodlums in a gun battle.

The DPO had led an operation against suspected hoodlums, who were reported to have stolen a vehicle belonging to a member of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Sam Oge.

A senior police officer, who confirmed the incident said the shootout with the criminals happened around Rumuigbo in Port Harcourt last Sunday.

Our source said four other policemen were hit by bullets and were recovering at an undisclosed hospital.

In the meantime, the Rivers State Police Command has confirmed the rescue of two kidnap victims around Umubele waterfront in Port Harcourt.

The Command spokesman, Ahmad Muhammad said the rescue operation was conducted by men of the tactical unit.

He identified the victims as Chris Lebare and George Anuobi.

Muhammad said the men were kidnapped at different times on 22nd of November along Rumuokoro-Rumuigbo road in Port Harcourt.

In a statement obtained by our correspondent, the Police Public Relations Officer also disclosed that three unidentified suspected kidnappers found guarding the rescued victims were killed during the operation.

He said items recovered from the scene include two locally made pistols, one axe and charms.
