EFCC ‘arrests’ former DSS chief, Ita Ekpenyong

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested a former Director General of the Department of State Security (DSS), Ita Ekpeyong.

Ekpeyong was arrested at his home located at 46, Maman Nasir Street, Asokoro, Abuja, on Thursday.

Reports say that a joint EFCC and police team made up of over 20 policemen effected the arrest.

The Punch reported that the team searched Ekpeyong’s mansion for over two hours without discovering any cash.

Ekpeyong was in charge of the DSS under the administration of ex-President Goodluck Jonathan from 2010 to 2015.

His arrest comes barely two days after the sack of immediate-past DG DSS, Lawal Daura, who had blocked his arrest by the EFCC despite a court order.

The EFCC had first attempted the raid in 2017, which led to a stand off between the team and a host of DSS agents guarding Ekpeyong’s residence.

The anti-graft agency had first invited Ekpeyong over his role in the infamous DasukiGate scandal but he failed to honour the invitation.

Security sources said Mr Daura enforced a questionable tradition of a security agency refusing to hand over its own to another agency for prosecution, except on strict and expressed directive from the president.
