Court convicts SAN, Joseph Nwobike over bribing Judge

Justice Raliat Adebiyi of an Ikeja High Court, Lagos has convicted a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Joseph Nwobike of bribing a Federal High Court Judge, Justice Mohammed Yinusa.

In a long read judgement, Justice Adebiyi found Nwobike guilty on a one counts charge of attempting to pervert the course of Justice.

Nwobike was arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on charges bothering on perverting the course of justice and offering gratification to public officials (judges and court Registrars)

Specifically, the Judge cited instances where Nwobike sent text messages to court officials specifically asking that his cases be assigned to Justice Yinusa.

In one of the text messages the EFCC tendered as evidence during the trial, Nwobike sent a message to one of Yinusa’s court registrar saying, “ask oga to discharge that order”.

In another instance, the EFCC also accused Nwobike of giving an envelope containing N750, 000 to Ronke Ogunleye, Yinusa’s Court registrar.
