Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, Most Rev (Dr.) Matthew Hassan Kukah has joined other stakeholders including Amnesty International, SERAP, the Transition Monitoring Group (TMG) to condemn the proposed law on the regulation of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) by the House of Representatives.
The outspoken clergy and various civil society groups made their positions known yesterday at the public hearing organized by the House of Representatives committee on non-governmental organisations and international development partners on the controversial NGO bill.
Titled “The non-governmental organisation regulatory commission of Nigeria (establishment) bill, it seeks amongst other things to allow the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), every two years, to renew or review the registration of NGOs, CSOs under the Companies and Allied Matters Act of 1992.
This is just as several civil society groups opposed to the bill besieged the National Assembly complex to protest against the passage of the bill.
