Mother jailed 10-years after stuffing new born baby in plastic bag and throwing her out of window

A mother who stuffed her newborn in a plastic carrier bag and hurled her out of a window has been jailed for ten years.

The baby girl miraculously survived the fall, but was left with serious injuries, including bleeding on the brain.

The woman, who cannot be named to protect the baby’s identity, had only just given birth after keeping her pregnancy a secret from her family.

After she admitted attempted murder at a previous hearing, she was jailed for ten years at Stafford Crown Court on Friday.

Judge Michael Chambers QC said: ‘This isn’t a spontaneous reaction of finding out she was pregnant.

‘There was clearly a case of some premeditation.

‘It was a grave and appalling act.’

The court heard the woman, from Oswestry in Shropshire, gave birth at a house on April 22 last year.

Prosecutor David Mason QC said: ‘She went upstairs into the bathroom and gave birth to a baby girl secretly.

‘She was full term and there were no complications.

‘She gave birth in the toilet bowl and put the baby in a plastic bag before throwing her out the window.

‘Below the window were concrete slabs.’

The court heard she didn’t want the child because it reminded her of the baby’s father who she had separated from.

The badly injured baby was found outside a house in Meole Brace, Shrewsbury, where the mother had been living.

Paul Smith, defending, said the woman was ‘naive and socially immature’ but was deeply remorseful.
