Road Safety considering equipping patrol teams with cameras

The Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC says it is considering equipping its patrol teams and other field personnel with cameras.
The Corps Marshal, Dr. Boboye Oyeyemi, gave the hint in an interview with newsmen on the sidelines of a strategic session with commanding officers of the commission in Abuja on Monday.
Oyeyemi said the initiative would offer the commission an unfiltered look at interactions between its officials and members of the motoring public.
He spoke against the backdrop of recent attacks on FRSC officials by motorists and security agents across the country.
No fewer than 10 cases were recorded in July alone and prominent among which was the shooting in Aba of two officials by security operatives attached to the Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly.
The FRSC boss said he was considering mounting the cameras on patrol vehicles, adding that the initiative would be discussed at the strategic session.
He also said the FRSC had instituted legal proceedings against perpetrators of the recent attacks on its personnel, including the Abia Speaker, his wife and driver.
Oyeyemi said: “We have served them court processes; we are following the due process of law.
“You know these things are guided by law and procedures and we are taking action step by step to see the cases to their logical conclusion.
“The corps has ruled out plea bargain or out of court settlement with traffic law offenders and those assaulting our officials.
“All cases must now go to court, and we are more committed now than ever to restore sanity to our roads.”
