Army promotes 6,199 soldiers fighting Boko Haram

The Nigerian Army yesterday said a total of 6,199 soldiers involved in the counterterrorism operation have been promoted.

The 6,199 soldiers are serving in Operation Lafiya Dole. The Director, Army Public Relations (DAPR), Brig-Gen. Sani Usman, who made the disclosure in a statement yesterday, said the special promotions were approved by the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt-Gen. Tukur Buratai. According to Usman, some were elevated to the rank of Lance Corporal, while others got the rank of Warrant Officer.

He gave the breakdown of the elevation as follows: Staff Sergeants to Warrant Officers (329), Sergeants to Staff Sergeants (371), Corporals to Sergeants (707), Lance Corporals to Corporals (1,290), and Privates to Lance Corporals (3,502). Usman quoted the COAS as congratulating the soldiers, while reminding them of the compelling need to “increase the tempo of the ongoing clearance operations of the Boko Haram terrorists in the North-East.” It will be recalled that an online platform had reported the promotion of 468 Lieutenants to the rank of Captain.
