LONDON: Six confirmed dead in Grenfell Tower fire, number expected to rise

Police this morning confirmed that at least six people have been killed in a fire at Grenfell Tower.

However, they added that they are at an early stage of the incident and that figure is expected to rise as the fire is continuing to rage in many flats throughout the building.

London Ambulance Service says 20 people injured in the Grenfell Tower fire are in critical care.

Flames tore up the 24-storey Grenfell Tower in north Kensington, leaving people trapped on upper floors, including children, some holding babies from windows and others jumping from their flats.

The fire broke out shortly before 1am when many residents will have been in bed and spread incredibly quickly up the outside of the building.

Commander Stuart Cundy, from the Metropolitan Police, said: ‘Our thoughts are with everyone involved in this truly shocking fire at Grenfell Tower.

‘I can confirm six fatalities at this time but this figure is likely to rise during what will be a complex recovery operation over a number of days. Many others are receiving medical care.

Denise Bloomfield, 37, who was evacuated from a nearby flat, said: ‘You could feel the heat from where you were standing. It was scary. It was like watching a movie.

‘People were like zombies in their pyjamas. It was just not real.’

She had looked out of her window and ‘saw the whole building on fire and people screaming for help’.

She said: ‘We ran out and saw the whole building on fire. People near me were screaming because their loved ones were there.

‘There was nothing you could do because we were being pushed back. There was nothing you could do because it was too big. The fire just took so quickly.

‘There were people who were just surviving … and waiting for the fire to take them, just waiting to die.
