Policeman kills truck driver in Lagos

A trigger-happy policeman yesterday shot and killed a truck driver, Dan Jos, at the Tin-Can Island Port in Lagos. Jos had allegedly challenged the policeman for urinating on a truck at the park. A witness, Kabiru Alaba, said the truck driver challenged the policeman over his indecent act, but the confrontation did not go down well with the policeman.

It was learnt that the policeman quickly called his colleagues and one of them opened fired at the driver and disappeared. Alaba said that the policeman was attached to the Roll On-Roll Off (RORO) Division of the police.

The witness stressed that the driver’s killing disrupted business activities at the port when the truckers and members of Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), Tin Can chapter, blocked the port access road to protest the death of their colleague. Alaba said: “The policeman was urinating on one of our trucks when Alhaji Dan Jos challenged him.

The quarrel led to his death when Alhaji Dan Jos was shot in his thigh.” The Chairman, Road Transport Employers’ Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), Tin-Can Port chapter, Isiaka Olalere, confirmed the incident.

He said: “I have just been told now that one of my members has been shot by a policeman. I am going to the garage to put everything under control.” When contacted, the Public Relations Officer of the command, Sadik Olatunde, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, said he was not aware of the crisis at the port.

Olatunde, however, said he would get across to the Divisional Police Officer to stem the violence. He said: “I will get across to the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) at the command to put everything under control.”
