NATIP arrests 80 traffickers, rescue 194 victims in Edo, Delta

No fewer than 80 human traffickers have been arrested by the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons in Edo and Delta States respectively in 2016.

The Benin Zonal Commander, Odita Ebenezer, who disclosed this in Benin, said the agency has rescued about 194 victims during the period under review.

He said the suspects were arrested at different locations under the zone.

Ebenezer disclosed that the agency also secured the conviction of three of the human traffickers, with jail sentences ranging from two to 14 years, while 31 suspects had been charged to court.

“Some were arrested within Benin as result of petitions from parents of the victims. Most of them were being trafficked to Europe ‎through different routes. Some were brought back from Lagos, Kano and different parts of Nigeria. Conviction takes a lot,” he said.

According to him, most of  the victims were teenagers aged 13 and 19, had all been reunited with their families.

Ebenezer noted that the zonal command had rescue over 2,000 victims and convicted 50 persons in Edo and Delta, since its inception in 2004.

According to him, many human traffickers had shifted their routes to rural areas due to the heavy security presence in the metropolis, assuring that the agency would continue to trail them.

He advised parents to stop encouraging their children to be trafficked and also keep an eye on them, saying that recession should not encourage slavery because it is everywhere.

Ebenezer added that parents and guidance should not to be tempted by financial gains to subject their children and wards to inhuman treatments.
