The US State Department has announced that it has closed down a fake American embassy which issued thousands of illegal visas over the last 10 years in Ghana’s capital, Accra.

The unlikely building that holds this dubious ’embassy’ looks nothing like an actual consulate, was said to have been run by a syndicate of Ghanaian and Turkish nationals who charged $6,000 per visa.

The ‘visa office’ was said to open three times a week and had the portrait of American president Barack Obama on the wall – apparently to convince applicants that it was for real.

During the raids led to a number of arrests, authorities seized visas authentic and forged India, South Africa and the European Schengen area and 150 passports from ten different countries with a laptop computer and smart phones.
