A Nigerian mother has been arrested in Vienna after allegedly dumping her newborn baby inside a dustbin in an airport toilet, Daily Mail is reporting.
The reason given by the Nigerian mum, whose name was yet to be revealed as at press time, was that she did not want to miss her flight.
She was on her way from Minsk, Belarus to Washington DC, United States of America.
The baby was discovered by a cleaner inside a plastic bag at Vienna International Airport, the Daily Mail reported.
The baby later died in the hospital in the early hours of Thursday.
A police spokesman said the mother was “found bleeding in the waiting area” and taken to the hospital.
She claimed that her baby was stillborn, but officials said the child died in hospital “due to a prolonged lack of oxygen”.
A post-mortem examination is due to take place to determine the exact cause of death, the Daily Mail said.
The mother has since been arrested.
Prosecutor, Friedrich Koehl, said she will be investigated on possible charges of “suspicion of killing a child at birth”.
The offence carries a sentence of up to five years in jail.
