A 26-year-old man, Jimoh Yusuf, on Thursday, appeared before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stabbing a couple staying in his father’s property.
Yusuf, a resident of No. 20, Ishaga Road, Agbelekale, Ikeja, is standing trial on a four-count charge of challenge to a duel fight, assault, disorderly person and attempt to murder.
The prosecutor, Insp. Mathew Akhaluode told the court that the accused committed the offences on Oct. 14 at their residence.
Akhaluode said that the accused unlawfully assaulted Mayowa Taiwo and his wife Kehinde Taiwo by beating them up and stabbing them with a broken bottle.
The prosecutor said that the accused is the landlord’s son.
He said: “Taiwo said he was in his room when he heard Yusuf harassing a friend who came to visit them.
“The complainant said that when he confronted the accused about what he had done, Yusuf came down from his apartment and smashed a bottle on his head.
“Taiwo said that his wife quickly rushed out and dragged him inside in order to treat the wound the accused had inflicted on him.
“The complainant said that when his wife went out to quickly get him a painkiller at a nearby chemist, the accused stopped her on the way and started beating her.
“Taiwo said that after beating her to a pulp, Yusuf took a broken bottle and stabbed her all over her body.
“Kehinde was rescued by other tenants who were at the scene of the incident and was immediately rushed to the hospital for treatment.
“The case was reported to the police and the accused was arrested for further questioning.”
The prosecutor said that the offences contravened Sections 55, 166,171 and 228 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
Section 171 prescribes a three-year jail term for assault occasioning harm while Section 228 stipulates life imprisonment for attempted murder.
The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Magistrate Y.R. Pinheiro granted him bail in the sum of N100,000 bail, with two sureties.
The magistrate said the sureties must be gainfully employed and should show evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.
