Okowa allegedly injured in domestic accident

The Delta State Governor, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa,  has reportedly sustained an injury on his head when he allegedly fell at the Governor’s Lodge,  Asaba.

It was learnt that the governor allegedly fell and broke his head due to slippery tiles in the house last week Wednesday when he was preparing to attend the World Teachers’ Day held in Asaba, the state capital.

The incident prompted him to direct his deputy, Kingsley Otuaro, to represent him at the World Teachers’ Day celebration in the state.

But the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, dismissed the rumour, saying it was not true that the governor was sick.

The governor’s health was learnt to be one of the prayer points at Monday’s thanksgiving mass to mark the beginning of the 2016/2017 legal year held at the Emmanuel the Saviour Catholic Church, Asaba.

Our correspondent learnt that Okowa had been receiving treatment from his personal doctor at the Governor’s Lodge since the incident.

There were also unconfirmed reports alleging that he had been reportedly flown abroad on Monday morning when doctors observed that his health had deteriorated.

A source, who confirmed the governor’s ill-health to our correspondent late Monday evening, however, dismissed insinuations that Okowa had been flown abroad for treatment.

The source told our correspondent that the governor was still at the Governor’s Lodge and was responding to treatment.

Another source, who confirmed the development, said it was just a minor injury but was the reason why the governor had not been seen in any social events of late.

“What I know is that the governor sustained a little injury when he mistakenly slipped on the tiles. The governor is in the state and recuperating. I’m sure he will be out in public soon,” another source reluctantly told our correspondent on the telephone.

Meanwhile, the governor’s spokesman, Aniagwu, while dismissing the report that his boss had allegedly been flown abroad, said Okowa was hale and hearty, and had been “attending to hundreds of files since the weekend up to the closing of work on Monday.”

According to him, the governor only sustained a minor bruise on his finger and has fully recuperated, noting that the injury did not however prevents him from carrying out his duties as being wrongly peddled on the Internet.

Aniagwu  said, “The governor has been attending to files and even up to the closing hours of work today (Monday). The report is not true. If you want to see the governor visit the Government House tomorrow (Tuesday) morning and I will take you to him (Okowa).

“He only sustained an ignorable bruise on his hand. Deltans should not panic. The governor is fine and has been attending to visitors and files. He minuted some files to me today (Monday). How can a governor who is sick and flown abroad be attending to files inside Government House?”
