NBA calls for caution over conflicting court judgments

The Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, has expressed disappointment over conflicting judgement coming out from the courts.

The outgoing National Chairman of the NBA, Austin Aleghe, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN, said this in his remark to open this year’s NBA conference, holding in Port Harcourt.

Aleghe said it was sad that Judges were giving judgments that were capable of destroying the integrity of the Judiciary.

He called on the National Judicial Council and the Chief Judge of Nigeria to rise to the occasion and save the judiciary from imminent ridicule.

He also said the NBA was concerned about the management of the Nigerian Economy.

Aleghe said the purpose of the theme for this year’s conference was to discuss events unfolding in the Federal Government led by President Muhammadu Buhari, in terms of the war against corruption, agitation by different groups, among others.

‎”We want to say that the entire members of the Legal community are disappointed and embarrassed by the spate of conflicting judgments on similar matters arising from the courts.

“This is totally avoidable and uncalled for and we call on the NJC ‎and my Lord the CJN not to tolerate this. We call on the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court to look into this matter.

“It is a shame, it is an embarrassment and it diminishes the position of lawyers in this country.”
