PDP Makes U-Turn, Proceeds With National Convention

Peoples Democratic Party on Wednesday made a tactical U-turn from its decision to postpone its national convention till November.

It rather moved the convention to its Ricers State secretariat in Port Harcourt.

It said it was in obedience to the order of a Federal High Court in Port Harcourt, which gave it the go-ahead to proceed with the convention.
The convention was declared open by the factional National Chairman, Ahmed Makarfi.

PDP NEC had earlier said it would shift the convention by 90 days after the previous venue, Sharks Stadium, Port Harcourt, was sealed off by police and soldiers on Wednesday.

New Telegraph correspondent in Port Harcourt, Emmanuel Masha, reports: “Leaders of PDP are determined to go ahead with the convention in a hall behind the Rivers State secretariat of the party.

The hall can barely accommodate 2000 delegates, but members are happy that the convention is taking place. ”

Some delegates who had rushed to the airport, and motor parks to find their way home are being urged to return by delegates from their states.”

At the convention, the PDP NEC extended the tenure of the National Caretaker Committee led by Makarfi by one year and expanded its membership to 13.

It also mandated the Makarfi Exco to hold a national convention within one year but barred its members from seeking any elective post.
More details as developments unfold.
