FG Dissolves OAU Governing Council, Sacks VC

The crisis rocking the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, took a new dimension on Thursday night when the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu reportedly announced the dissolution of the university’s Governing Council and cancellation of the appointment of Prof. Ayobami Salami as the institution’s 11th substantive vice-chancellor.

This decision,‎ which is the Federal Government’s response to the persistent protests by the university’s non-academic workers over alleged manipulation of the appointment process, has been reportedly viewed by the new vice-chancellor as an infringement on the university autonomy as contained in the ASUU-Federal Government 2009 agreement.

Salami is, therefore, said to be considering approaching a competent court of law to challenge his alleged removal, saying having been duly appointed by the Governing Council with an appointment letter issued, only a competent law court can sack him from office.

However, the protesting members of the university’s chapters of‎ the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities (NASU) and the Senior Staff Union of Universities (SSANU) have once again occupied the ground floor of the university’s Senate Building in celebration of the new development, describing it as a positive step towards resolving the many contradictions facing the 54-year-old ivory tower.

When New Telegraph called the Chairman of NASU, Comrade Wole Odewunmi, to seek his view on the latest development, he requested that our correspondent should call back, as the background voices of the jubilant workers made him inaudible.

Meanwhile, the leadership of the institution’s chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has refused to comment on the matter, saying it was too early to rush to the media.

The Chairman of the chapter, Dr Caleb Aborisade, explained that the congress would react appropriately soon.

But in his reaction, a strong member of the union at the national level, who craved anonymity, said the decision of the Minister was not only a violation of the ASUU-FGN agreement on university autonomy but also a violation of the academic freedom as enshrined in the Ethiopian convention document.
