Judge’s absence stalls Yakubu, Omokore’s arraignment

The arraignment of former Group Managing Director (GMD) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Andrew Yakubu, and six others before an Abuja Federal High Court was stalled yesterday due to the judge’s absence.

Justice Binta Nyako, whose court is to handle the matter, did not sit and no reason was given for her absence. The court officials gave a fresh date of July 4 for the arraignment.

According to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), oil magnate, Jide Omokore, Victor Briggs, Abiye Memnere, David Mbanefo, Atlantic Energy Brass Development Limited and Atlantic Energy Drilling Concepts Limited are among those facing the four-count charge.

Omokore’s company and other companies were allegedly awarded multi-billion dollar contracts without due process between 2011 and 2014.

The deal, which awarded the lucrative OML 30 and 34 to Atlantic energy Ltd, was signed by the former minister of petroleum, Diezani Alison-Madueke, which gave it a 55 per cent stake in the oil block. The company allegedly lifted crude oil valued at $712m and paid less than the actual value to the NNPC.
