Boko Haram’s Call For Ceasefire

The terrorist group Boko Haram recently indicated that they are willing to broker a peace deal with the Federal Government in which they will release the remaining kidnapped Chibok school-girls who were taken hostage more than two years ago. In return, the terrorist group want complete amnesty and freedom from all prosecution. A senior member of the group, Amir Mohammad Abdullahi, said they are prepared to negotiate terms of surrender and release the hostages on the condition that they will not be betrayed by the government or killed after surrendering. According to the Amir, “We want to surrender because things are getting worse.” He further mentioned that a third of the girls are still alive, while the rest, in his words “have been martyred.”

Recent reports have indicated that the terrorist group, Boko Haram, have been defeated with all the areas that they had captured and occupied in the North Eastern part of Nigeria, recaptured and liberated. What is left now is mop up operations in their last strongholds in the Sambisa Forest. The war is gradually coming to an end. The priority of the government is now the rehabilitation of more than two million people displaced by the war and rebuilding of all areas devastated by the conflict. However, at this point in time, saving the lives of the over 200 school-girls who were abducted by the terrorists is also a top priority. The government must do all that is within its power to bring back those girls and the other hostages who are still being held by the remnants of the terrorist group. This will include negotiations with the terrorist group as a last option.

Within the last four years, several attempts have been made by the Federal Government to bring the terrorist group to the table. In the last attempt, even the President of Chad Idris Deby was involved in the effort. However, Boko Haram continued to renege on all ceasefire agreements. Now, it is almost meaningless to negotiate but for the Chibok girls. The Federal Government should pursue the war to a conclusive end.

The issue of the Chibok girls, in the final analysis, is crucial in the final phase of the war. President Muhammadu Buhari mentioned in his Democracy Day speech that saving and bringing home the Chibok girls is his topmost priority. The Government must spare no effort to save those girls who are still alive and reduce civilian causalities to the barest minimum and to achieve that, it is imperative to hold onto any straw no matter how fragile. Therefore, since the insurgents are seeking for peace, the possibility of saving innocent lives that have been held captive grows by the day, if they are truly sincere in their claims they should first show proof of life of the remaining Chibok girls and other captives and only this should determine the level of clemency that will be considered for the terrorists in the end.
