Kidnapped international footballer ‘rescued’ in Mexico

An international footballer was was kidnapped after leaving a party in north-east Mexico has been rescued, officials say.

Olympiakos striker Alan Pulido was abducted near Ciudad Victoria, in Tamaulipas state on Sunday.

But the Tamaulipas security co-ordination group for Mexico’s security forces said in a statement this morning that a rescue occurred shortly before midnight.

The 25-year-old, who has scored four goals in six games for Mexico, is being medically assessed.

Reports suggest he has been found unharmed, although he has been pictured in Mexican media with a bandaged hand.

According to local reports, six masked men took the striker away ‘by force’ after the kidnapping in a car park in the early hours of Sunday morning.

His girlfriend who was also at the scene was left unharmed.

Mexico has one of the highest kidnapping rates in the world, with official figures stating 1,000 people are abducted every year. However, some feel the true figure could be much higher as many go unreported.
