Ex-Gov Dariye’s arrest warrant still valid – UK Police

The Police in the United Kingdom have said the arrest warrant issued against a former Go‎vernor of Plateau State, Joshua Dariye, in the country was still valid.

A retired Metropolitan Police Officer, Peter Clarke, who testified before Justice Adebukola Banjoko of a High Court of the Federal Capital Territory,‎ said Metropolitan Police in the UK have been placed on red alert to arrest Dariye if he steps into that country.

Clarke however admitted that Dariye had opened his foreign account long before he became a state governor.

Dariye, now a senator, is being prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on a 23-count charge bordering on money laundering and diversion of funds.
The trial continued on Monday with the anti-graft agency presenting its witness before Justice Banjoko.

Dariye is accused of diverting about N1.2 billion from the state’s Ecological Fund to private companies and individuals.

Since his first arraignment on July 13, 2007 at the Federal High Court, Abuja, Dariye had denied any wrongdoing and had his legal team file several motions to delay the trial.
Following his “plea of not guilty” to the charges preferred against him, the court had set aside November 13, 2007 for the prosecution to open its case.
