Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Tuesday arrested the outgoing Chairman of Kuje Area Council in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Tete Ishaku Shaban.
The EFCC, in a statement signed by its Head of Media and Publicity, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren, said Shaban’s arrest bordered on alleged abuse of office and obtaining by false pretence to the tune of N17.5 million
The Commission said the suspect’s arrest followed a complaint made by one Najumudeen Gidado, who it said, “alleged that sometime in 2014, his company, Trade Executive Network Limited, bid for the reconstruction and modernisation of Kuje Main Market in Abuja.”
It said the complainant claimed that his company was awarded the contract and a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), was signed.
The EFCC said “Gidado further alleged that Shabanlater demanded for the sum of N17, 500,000 to facilitate the approval of the contract for his company, which he obliged.”
It quoted him as saying: “I later paid the N17,500,000 into his accounts domiciled in Zenith and FCMB banks”.
However, Shaban allegedly “awarded the contract to another company and refused to refund the petitioner, without any explanation.”
